In Foreground are Graves for 5 Civil War Veterans ~ until very Recently only One of them had a Tombstone
I’m very happy to say I had a hand, a small hand, but I was part of getting stones for the 4 veterans who didn’t have one. The main physical work was done by Randy Fletcher, and his wife Karen, and son Andrew. Judy J. did the majority of the searching in old records, and making sure the new markers complied with the rules for National Historic Sites. It started when Randy contacted Findagrave.com, looking to see if there were any Union Generals in Oregon, or what the highest ranking Civil War Veteran was in Oregon. He found one Gen. Thomas Jones THORP, and requested someone take a picture of his grave site. I staked a claim on his request, and tried diligently to find the grave and photograph it, but alas, it had not been marked for over 92 years. We all kind of got together on it, and mostly I lent moral support, and went around other cemeteries too, photographing graves of veterans. Turned out there were 67 Civil War Veterans at Crystal Lake Cemetery, in Corvallis, Benton County, Oregon. Many were unmarked, but not any more. Willard MANTER already had a headstone, but it was in very sad shape. Karen Fletcher lovingly and patiently did a 4 process cleaning, and it looks fantastic. The one way toward the huge tree is William H. DOBELL He got a granite stone, because it seemed better suited to what was around him. The four white marble stones in the foreground are from left to right, Gen. Thomas Jones THORP, Willard MANTER, Isaac Otto JOHNSON and Adolphus W. JONES. There were also some Confederate soldiers with unmarked graves. I believe that every single Civil War Veteran possible now has a marker at Crystal Lake. I was there the day they put these stones in, and I was very proud. The soil looked disturbed when it was done, but they had a few months to settle and grow green grass. I think they looked fantastic for the Memorial Day Observance. There was also a 100 year anniversary of placing the Civil War Monument, which is a tall, impressive centerpiece at the cemetery. .(0528thorpjonesisaacsonorjohnsonqdobellmanter)

Civil War Days 8×10 1lo

Civil War Days 8x10 1lo
Civil War Days was last weekend at David Davis Mansion. There were women dressed in the era as well as Civil War impersonators. The fellow with the cane is the second Great Grandson of Henry Jones, Co. D, 19th Iowa infantry. Also shown are General Robert E. Lee with three of his generals and a girl who, to me has a "Mona Lisa" quality about her.
